Last week, our KS2 pupils enjoyed a fantastic visit from Philip Kavvadias, author of ‘Mission: Microraptor’. Philip introduced himself with some relatable film and gaming references, he presented a highly entertaining quiz about therapods and how dinosaurs evolved into birds, and then the pupils had the opportunity to create their own characters, animal sidekicks and adventure stories. Philip was funny and informative – the pupils were thoroughly engaged and they laughed a lot. Thanks for an inspiring event!

Philip came to us just after the release of his new book. His presentation began by teaching students about the evolution of the type of dinosaur which led to the one in his story. He then gave pupils a chance to contribute ideas for his new book and ended with a Q&A session for the pupils.
The presentation was thoughtfully updated to match our setting and taught something the students are unlikely to encounter in the normal school curriculum. Students were most engaged when they were allowed to pitch ideas for his new book and Philip really made them feel part of the creative process.
Overall, it was a great experience and we would love for him to come back after he releases his next book!

Philip visited our school to talk about his new book. From the very beginning of his presentation he caught the pupils’ imaginations and ensured enthusiastic participation, taking them through a quiz about the evolution of birds from dinosaurs as well as some practical survival tips in the wild!
In the end, pupils helped Philip finalise the details of his second book (which we hope to see on our shelves soon!) and took lots of questions. Everyone in our school is looking forward to Philip’s next visit when the next instalment of his series is out.

Our children in Years 4 and 5 thoroughly enjoyed a talk from Philip. Philip was incredibly knowledgeable about his subject and kept the children engaged throughout his time with them. He included the children’s ideas in his talks and they were really enthused by his presentation.
Lots of children have ordered a copy of ‘Mission Microraptor’ and can’t wait to read it. I hope Philip can join us again for another talk next year! Thanks again Philip!

I just finished Mission: Microraptor. What a wonderful book!! The adventurous story line kept me captivated even though the language level was 10-year-old simple! I loved how the "big words" were side-commented by "who says that?" completely keeping young readers in mind.
Authentic connections to a tween's real life (time spent gaming, sedentary lifestyle, junk food) all the while giving non-condescending advice on healthy lifestyle (including witty food-related exclamations). Never sounds preachy!
Global environment crisis and sustainability messages, caring about nature's flora and fauna, funny without the potty jokes, and witty, boy scouts and survival skills made real, powerful message of friendship between two unlikely characters, typical schoolmates found in all classrooms who usually have strong prejudice against each other finally recognizing each other, recognition of personal traits (facepalm) and eagerness to overcome weaknesses (yes, we can do this in real life, too!)
Fun and fast-paced, I loved it, definitely recommend it, and absolutely looking forward to the next one!
